Inversion Therapy

Inversion therapy is a physical therapy method proven to have great effect on back pain and other muscular problems. It is one of the oldest therapies, dating back to 400 B.C. Historical evidence shows that Hippocrates, the father of medicine, had used inversion therapy in the treatment of the back ache problems.

Inversion therapy involves hanging upside down by your feet. The principle of inversion therapy relies on gravity. It seems to be effective, not only for the treatment of back problems but also as a part of exercise for athletes and other fitness-seeking persons.

Originally, inversion therapy was performed by hanging down from ropes and rods. With the evolution of the therapy throughout the years, many modifications have occurred to the methods of inversion therapy. First, specially designed shoes called ‘gravity boots’ were introduced to the scene, which help to support the ankles. The introduction of gravity shoes has given more security to the performance of inversion therapy, as it was a risky job. The effectiveness of inversion therapy has evolved into a routine exercise, and raised a need for more comfortable equipment.

Now, inversion therapy tables have revolutionized this unique exercise into a convenient practice. As inversion tables assure safety during exercise as well as reducing the tension in the foot, it can now be used for the daily exercise regime of regular people. Using a table gives confidence to the newly practicing exerciser, helping them to improve their activity in inversion therapy, so as to gradually raise the tilting angle to achieve total inversion, the inverted hanging position.

Inversion is widely used for treating back problems because of its unique activity in the spines, inducing mild traction. The inversion slightly elongates the spinal cord and releases the tension of the discs. In addition to relaxation of muscles and discs, this also helps to strengthen ligaments. The spinal muscles help to increase the circulation of lymph nodes in the body and also stimulate the circulatory system to increase blood circulation. Inversion is to be used only a few times a day, which in turn can provide the effect of high-impact workouts.

However, inversion therapy is not advised during pregnancy, for vertigo sufferers and people with high blood pressure.

Inversion therapy is a perfect solution to reduce back ache and to prevent back problems. It relieves stress, provides toning and relaxation of spinal muscles and contributes towards functional fitness.
